ABC Radio National's The Screen Show comes to the Festival as host Jason Di Rosso leads a candid discussion with filmmakers on the highs and lows of low-budget production. Featuring voices from across the program, including Hyun Lee (French Girls), Anthony Frith (Mockbuster) and 2025 alumni Christian Byers (Death of an Undertaker).

Presented in partnership with UTS Creative Practice Research Group, microWAVE 26 brings together a series of conversations exploring bold, independent filmmaking.

Anthony Frith
Director

Anthony Frith is a documentary writer and director obsessed with absurd pop-culture anomalies. His work has taken him from studying the art of churning out hundreds of novelty songs with cult musician Matt Farley in LESSONS FROM A MIDDLE CLASS ARTIST to making his feature debut with THE LAND THAT TIME FORGOT for the legendary studio The Asylum, which he directed simultaneously with his own behind-the-scenes documentary, MOCKBUSTER.

Christian Byers
Filmmaker/Actor

Christian Byers is an Australian filmmaker and actor, who has worked extensively in film from a young age with leading roles in the Australian films OPAL DREAMS (2006), DECEMBER BOYS (2007) and THE TREE (2010). On TV, he starred as Stevie Wright in FRIDAY ON MY MIND (2017) as well as the streaming series BUMP (2020-2024) and it’s spinoff YEAR OF (2023).

He co-wrote and acted in the short film LAURA (2020) which screened at Melbourne InternationalFilm Festival. As director and producer, he made the doc short SOLID FLESH (2021) which screened at the Melbourne Documentary Film Festival

Hyun Lee
Director

Hyun Lee is a Korean-Australian writer and director based in Sydney. Her short film ASIAN GIRLS had its world premiere at SXSW South by Southwest Film Festival in 2018 and was a recipient of the ScreenNSW: Emerging Filmmakers’ Fund. The film was distributed exclusively online through Gunpowder and Sky’s horror platform Alter where it has amassed over a million views. Her recent TV writing credits include Paramount+ series FAKE starring Asher Keddie and David Wenham. The series broke subscription and streaming records and won the Australian Writers’ Guild Award for Limited Series.

Jason di Rosso
Moderator

Jason Di Rosso is a filmmaker and critic, and the host of The Screen Show on ABC RN, the Australian public broadcaster’s only weekly program dedicated to cinema and television.
